GGRA’s Workforce Development Updates

Over the last several years the GGRA has focused a lot on Workforce Development and being a resource for our members struggling to find and retain staff. This year alone, GGRA has worked in partnership with Office of Economic & Workforce Development (OEWD) and City College’s Culinary & Hospitality Studies program to launch two Hospitality Boot Camps, which resulted in job training and placement for people with barriers to employment. In October, GGRA also launched a partnership with Culinary Agents to power the GGRA’s first Job Board for restaurants looking to hire and staff looking for positions.

Janan Howell, Senior Workforce Development Specialist with OEWD said, “The Golden Gate Restaurant Association has been an instrumental partner of the City and County of San Francisco’s Hospitality Initiative, a sector program under the Office of Economic & Workforce Development, designed to effectively coordinate training and employment resources that support the growth of a diverse and well qualified hospitality sector workforce in San Francisco. GGRA’s Associate Director, Donnalyn Murphy,  has had a strong presence with the Initiative and its’ training and community based partners. By bringing industry employers to hiring events, student showcases and as guest speakers, this effectively marketed the culinary talent to local employers, increasing the likelihood of students transitioning from the classroom to the kitchen.”

In light of all the Workforce Development efforts, Mike Moerschbacher, of JRK Property Holdings knew he could contact GGRA for assistance several weeks ago. He called us to say that Kuleto’s would be closing and all 102 FOH/BOH staff would be in need of new jobs by early January. Donnalyn quickly set up a job fair at Villa Florence with 15 GGRA restaurant members ready to interview and hire staff from Kuleto’s. At the end of the day, all staff looking for jobs at the fair were able to find something.

GGRA is committed to continually expand our workforce training efforts. If you have any questions, please email Donnalyn.
