Great Industry Support for Work-Based Learning!

 In News

For the last nine weeks, the GGRA hosted two interns from the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism program at John O’Connell High School. Yvonne Wu and Kelly Liang spent three hours a week in our office every Wednesday since late February. Their willingness to pitch in where needed, learn and try new tasks and work independently with minimal instruction were just a few of the traits that they possessed. On their last day, we asked them to provide us with a few thoughts about the experience from their perspective: Kelly & Yvonne. They have both been accepted to UC Davis and we wish them luck!

We are grateful to the members of GGRA who also hosted students from John O’Connell’s class and provided their students with hands on kitchen experiences. Our board members Ichi Sushi, Delfina & Locanda, Scala’s Bistro, Mission Bay Resort and Kuleto’s all brought interns from John O’Connell into their restaurants for the nine week period. Other members including Mission Pie, Palio d’Asti and Monsieur Benjamin joined in as well. This is fantastic industry support placing over 30 students from the program in total! A special thanks to Jewish Vocational Services for partnering with John O’Connell and handling the administration for this 9 week experience.

You can read about Ichi’s internship here in their blog.  Pete Osborne, Managing Partner at Mission Rock Resort, summed it up nicely, “I jumped at the opportunity and I would absolutely do it again. I think it’s a terrific opportunity for the kids to peek at real life, a real job, and for these students in particular to preview what life is really like in the restaurant business. For those that love it, it is great experience, and for those that don’t love it, they can spend more of their youth finding their passion in life.”

Every year, GGRA encourages members to provide work-based learning experiences to students enrolled in the San Francisco Unified School District’s Academy of Hospitality & Tourism.  As the stories above show, work-based learning experiences have a direct impact on the students that are placed exposing them to real work environments and providing them direct experience to prepare them for their careers.
