In Memoriam: Donnalyn Murphy

In Memoriam:  Donnalyn Murphy
Associate Director of the GGRA

The restaurant industry lost a champion with the passing of Donnalyn Murphy, Associate Director of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association. Donnalyn battled cancer this past year and had just returned enthusiastically to work full time after Thanksgiving, feeling recovered from her second cancer-related surgery and being declared cancer-free. Unfortunately, she succumbed to an infection last Tuesday.  A memorial service is to be held in January, so please stay tuned for more details.

Donnalyn joined GGRA in 2001, because of her “can-do attitude and positive spirit,” according to former GGRA ED, Patricia Breslin, moving up the ranks from an administrative position to associate director.  She spearheaded all our educational activities, leading our scholarship efforts, engagement with schools and training programs, managing our Food Safety Certification program and working closely with the SF Health Department, as well as many other agencies and nonprofits.  Donnalyn served on the San Francisco Workforce Investment Board representing GGRA, where she provided invaluable industry insight and worked to address the challenges confronting local industry and workforce. Murphy also sat on the advisory boards for the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development’s Hospitality Initiative, City College of San Francisco’s Culinary and Hospitality program, San Francisco State University Hospitality Management, and SFUSD’s Academy of Hospitality and Tourism.

In the words of Elliott Katz, GGRA Scholarship Foundation Board Director, “Donnalyn made a difference.” There are no words to express what a great loss this is to GGRA and the restaurant community at large. We will continue to carry on her great work for years to come.
